Is Lightning Attracted to a Metal Roof?

There is absolutely no increase in the likelihood of your home being struck by lightning if you have a metal roof. In fact, if lightning does strike your steel roof, the energy safely dissipates throughout the entire roof surface, and can exit into the ground. Also, because metal roofing is NOT combustible or flammable, it is an even smarter choice when severe weather is a possibility.

Is a Stone Coated Steel Roof a Noisy Roof?

Absolutely not!  Steel roofing is often much quieter than even an asphalt shingle roof. Because of our unique installation method that creates a sound and temperature “buffer zone” of dead air space, along with our beautifully functional stone coated surfaces, even a torrential rain striking the roof panels is no louder than it would be on a heavy wood shake roof.

Is Rust a Problem with a Stone Coated Steel Roof?

No! In fact, our steel roofing panels are made from high quality 26-gauge, pre-primed, galvanized steel that is coated with an acrylic basecoat. Ceramic earth-stone granules are then embedded over this basecoat. Finally, a clear acrylic over-glaze is applied and baked on. This provides your home with a long-lasting, durable and fade-resistant protection for a lifetime of enjoyment.

Is Denting a Problem?

Stone Coated Steel Roofs can and do stand up to  hailstones, snow loads and extreme wind conditions without any structural or cosmetic damage. Our weatherproof warranties include a 120 M.P.H. Wind Uplift Warranty (equal to an F2 tornado!) and a 2.5 inch Hailstone Warranty from the manufacturers.

Can I walk on my new roof?

If you’ve heard anyone say that a metal roof shouldn’t be walked on, they’re obviously not talking about our products. The unique interlocking panel design, rugged 26-gauge galvanized steel construction and proven installation methods provide a strong roof system that can be walked on under normal conditions...

Is it HEAVY?

No! Our installed weight of 1.25 lb / square foot is half the weight of most asphalt and wood roofs and only 10% of a concrete tile roof. This dramatically reduces the weight that the trusses have to carry, a clear advantage over other roof products.

What about SNOW?

The degree of snow movement on the roof plane is dependent on the slope, friction on the granular/pre-painted roof, cleanliness and volume of snow. To provide protection around entrances and exits, use proper snow retention or deflection products.

What about FIRE?

A steel roof is non-combustible. Steel does not burn and offers various options in its installation to upgrade the fire resistance of the homes' structure. Most roofing materials have fire resistant strengths on one side only. Other heavier roof systems provide little or moderate resistance during internal fires and can cause premature roof structure collapse. Remember if an internal fire is at the underside of the roof structure, metal will provide the greatest degree of maintaining structural integrity and assist in containing the fire.

Will it make our home HOT?

No! Steel absorbs and dissipates heat quickly. As with any material, color is the governing factor when exposed to sunshine. Installing a steel roof on your home will reduce your energy requirements.

What about HAIL?

Our metal roofs have passed a class 4 UL hail test. There have been occasions in a hail belt where unusually large diameter (3") hail occurred, which created some minor cosmetic damage.

Can I PAINT it?

Painting over a new installation of pre-painted or granular steel roofing is not recommended. All coil-coated paint films are formulated for the high heat curing process and may not allow good adhesion between fields applied paint and the original surface without special preparation and paint.

Can I CLEAN it?

An occasional cleaning of metal roofs can extend the service life and help to maintain the appearance of the finish (no different than a car finish). For protected areas (i.e. overhangs) an annual spring cleaning is recommended. Simply washing with plain water using hoses or low pressure sprays is often sufficient.
